I recently preached on 1 Thess. 2:17-18, "But since we were torn away from you, brothers, for a short time, in person not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face, 18 because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, again and again—but Satan hindered us." I have been thinking of that passage this week while we as a church family are torn away from being able to meet together in person. In Paul's situation it was clearly the work of Satan because he was torn away by a mob of people who persecuted him for preaching the Gospel. That kind of clarity is not as easy to come by with a virus. But amidst all our questions, one thing we do know for sure is God was not surprised by COVD-19 because He is still on the throne and still in ultimate control. Another thing we know for sure is that death should come as surprise to no one: 10 out of 10 people will die someday and whether that be from a heart attack or old age or a tragic accident or COVID-19 or something else in 2020 or from something else many years from now, no one will escape death and thus the highest priority of every living person should be to prepare for eternity by getting right with God through faith in Jesus Christ since, "It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment." (Heb. 9:27).
